Is mobile phone allowed in college?
It’s pretty interesting to be honest! Yes, I know that there is a world where technology becomes all the rage and has become so ubiquitous that it can actually be considered something that was invented by some sort of evil genius. One might feel obliged to say how far away from reality this idea is. That is why we are here talking about mobile phones in college. You will find out how much does mobile phone use have to do with what I thought before. Then you might want to take a look at these other areas where mobile phones have been banned since school started and what they really say about technology.
1st area where mobile phones were banned or banned completely (or both): public bathrooms
Not only did public bathrooms get its own ban on mobile phones but also in many places the actual act of using a cell phone while peeing and walking the walkway. Now don’t get me wrong, this may seem like a small deal but when people cannot just hold their phones in a normal situation and not reach them easily, especially when one person has to go into the bathroom every time he wants to call for help, this is one place where someone had to pay as well as they could for the privilege. So what could these guys or girls have done? They could have used the time that would otherwise have gone towards fixing stuff in the bathroom and instead they could have spent that time looking through pictures on Snapchat, texting, posting videos etc.
This whole “no phones in the bathroom” thing is a great example of how these students can control their devices while not touching any surfaces. Instead of being able to hold their smartphones or even reach them, they could have tried to see what would happen if they were to leave the room and then step outside. Well, this is where things get complicated. Imagine a student going to his bathroom every single morning and then going to work each day. This scenario is one where technology could still be considered acceptable when it comes to working outside of class but when in the presence of a smartphone, it wouldn’t be okay.
When it goes that far without your consent, how is anyone supposed to even believe that they could use their device so casually and peacefully? Not only that but what sort of rule is set where one has to go into the bathroom to check what number someone could be calling in real life? What kind of system is built into this whole business model? It has got to be fixed somehow! There has to be an answer! But first let’s talk about what we can measure.
A lot have written about this topic before and what we can actually measure is whether or not or not someone went inside a bathroom after coming back from the gym or whether someone went inside because she needed to, or if she went into a bathroom just because she wanted to and not because her friend told her to go there. Here are a few examples:
Number of times someone has gone inside a bathroom in spite of the fact that they were asked not to. It seems really amazing, but this doesn’t mean anything. A lot of people think it means “I don’t care anymore when you tell me not to.” The truth is either way, there is no real evidence that someone has come in just because they wanted to.
For example: My professor said that he felt sorry for his student’s parents when he came to ask him to go inside when he wasn’t feeling very good. And my professor made me feel the same way too. We would always meet up and discuss our differences but I still remember the moment it became clear that it would be impossible to stay in the classroom if he didn’t have a camera on his laptop that was connected to his phone. Even though I am not against his decision to keep cameras at all times, I would definitely go inside the bathroom to check. If it was my friend asking me to go inside, I wouldn’t worry much. As long as it would not hinder him, I would go inside.
What we can measure is how often someone does the following things: enters a bathroom without permission, takes off all his clothes in a restroom and then walks upstairs in full outfit without getting undressed, returns home without having taken anything off. More often than not, it goes the opposite, where the person who enters a bathroom does so in the middle of the night and then gets undressed and goes to sleep. No, he hasn’t been sleeping. He has gone there and now he feels tired. Do we really want to know who has done all this? Maybe it’s just to make sure they won’t get caught.
But you see what I’m point here is that most of them don’t just do this for fun. They aren’t even aware of their actions. When someone takes off their clothes in a bathroom or comes back from the gym, they are doing so as to improve not just themselves but also in order to protect others around them. Why should they get undressed and go to bed? There is nothing stopping them from putting on whatever clothes is comfortable to them. Also, when people ask, “What are you doing in the bathroom?” “I have to pee, but I swear that would never happen if the door wasn’t closed” is something that people hear all the time. So don’t blame yourself and put a stop to the conversation now.
But what about people who are caught? Or in other words… who are guilty of taking a mobile device out of hands? I don’t know what happens. People will say that it’s a bad parenting tool and I agree with them 100%. But not everyone is responsible enough to make sure they don’t get caught. So I will bring up another question again.
How exactly do we decide who needs to be put on probation just because they have a phone? Some people are simply careless; no matter what excuse they make, others are genuinely ashamed of the actions that they took. Sometimes it’s more complicated and requires a bit of luck. We need to figure out who really needs to be punished.
Are you thinking of deleting Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook in this case? Are you thinking of deleting everything at the next school reunion. These people are serious offenders in this respect. Think about it! Nobody likes you because you took out your phone and posted a video of random people’s faces, right? I get it. However, people have grown with such ease that they do the exact opposite of making others uncomfortable.
Most people know better than to post something stupid or embarrassing and then wonder why there are a bunch of comments. Have you come to realize though that when people really need to go outside of the comfort zone? Where their mind and body were already prepared to become “a man”, they do so. I wonder what’s happened to those people who decided to give up their freedom that they thought they didn’t need? Did they realize that they needed it to become a different person or was it that they simply don’t have any skills to use the device properly? Either way I think it’s obvious that nobody likes to punish others. At least, no matter how bad a behavior can be, we all know the old saying “if it ain’t broke then makin’ it right”.
So, if you were a total jerk to everybody and you gave them a free ride, tell them that you’re going to watch their video before you return home. Tell them that you know you need to get a haircut or just go to the supermarket. Don’t get us wrong here, sometimes you just miss out on the best possible trip. Just like people who go to Starbucks too often or spend lots of money on shoes at the mall, people with smartphones are missing out on the best possible experience just because of a little mistake on their part.
So, here is my conclusion: yes, I know people who are offended when somebody uses a phone to talk and the argument comes down to one simple word: manners. This is the biggest issue because, according to me, you really shouldn’t be talking when you can’t do so anyway. You know what I mean? Take a break, drink water and maybe go outside for a while and go to the movies instead. Try not to judge someone, treat them as if they are the dumbest person in the universe and live your life to the fullest without thinking twice about whether you do okay or not. Let others judge you and try to change them for how they are before they judge you. I do hope that this helps and lets me end this piece and thank you for reading! Please comment and share.
