The Kylin Operating System is a new open source mobile operating systems currently being developed by China's NetDragon Websoft. It's designed to power devices that feature between 2-4GB of RAM, and it's based on Linux. Though it was originally announced back in 2014, the OS has been kept under wraps until now. Today, NetDragon has released some more information about what we can expect from this operating system. For starters, it looks like NetDragon might be targeting a launch sometime in mid-2016.

1. What is the Kylin OS?
Kylin OS is an Android-based operating system developed by Kylin Software, which is based in China. It was released in January 2016, and it is a Linux-based mobile operating system for smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs. It also looks like the system will have an ad-supported business model but nothing else is known so we'll have to keep our eyes peeled for more information. It will most likely be based on Android 14 and it’s going to come with a lot of customizability. Considering that Android 14 has been available since April, this could mean that the OS is a little more advanced than what we’re used to seeing from Chinese manufacturers. Last but not least, we have to remember that this is a closed-source project at the moment so there is nothing concrete to say about its final release date nor specs. What we’re looking at here is a generalised overview of what’s going to be given the Android 14 treatment. With excellent battery life, a full-customisable interface, and an operating system which supports Android apps, Kylin OS is definitely on its way to becoming a powerful force in the mobile industry.
2. What are its features?
First of all, it is important to know what features it has. It is a good idea to read about it and know the features that you will be able to use. You can find reviews to know what others think about it. You can also ask the seller for more information about the product. NetDragon’s description for Kylin OS begins with “Make your phone feel like a PC, but with excellent Linux support”. The system supports collaboration and file management. Apps can be created, customized, and deleted. It includes terminal emulation, as well as a web server and a text-to-speech environment (such as Emojipedia). Smartphone features include Linux 3D desktop support, file management, weather forecasts, AR/VR support, calendar app, GPS, GPS Hiking, and many other apps. It also has built-in battery, bluetooth, GPS, compass, and flashlight. Kylin OS UI looks very similar to that of Android, and it will probably retain Android design features such as immersive notifications. You may like some Android elements such as recents, dialogues, and widgets. Some features and functionalities may differ slightly when compared to Android. Smartphone features are primarily focused on text filtering, colleague management, picture browsing, emoji, voice recorder,- and others. The fact that Kylin OS contains Linux 3D is a good sign, since Linux apps can run on Android devices. The system will support TLS, Wi-Fi 6, GPRS/EDGE, 3GPP, 850/1900MHz, 3CA, CDMA, FDD-LTE, dual SIM 4G, GNSS/ATH, Call quality filter, SIM cancel or pass code, wifi speed proxy, call waiting and passcode, media streaming, Bluetooth codec codecs, and others. It is also IP67 water-resistant. Kylin OS shows the Android essence with Linux. It looks like a more advanced and powerful version of Android. It is more than just another full-fledged mobile operating system installed on Android devices. In fact, NetDragon has got a dual branding with Linux and Android, and its main UI looks very similar to Android. This means that Android can run on Linux. Therefore, it is advisable for specific reasons to keep Google’s operating system on other architectures, especially since its functions are so easy to codify.

3. Why build a new mobile operating system?
There are many reasons why a company might want to create a new operating system. For instance, a company might want to create a new operating system for its devices because it thinks that the current operating system that its devices run on is too difficult for its customers to use.Sometimes, the company bringing up an entirely new OS is trying to brand itself and ease off the pressure that was associated with the operating system that the company is most famous for. And in cases like these, a company can create its own unique set of “proprietary” or “unique” features to make its software more useful and easier to use. In other words, the OS could have a sort of “flavor of its own”. Another reason that a company might want to create a new operating system is that it has plans for its devices to run Android instead of iOS. And NetDragon is apparently using Android as a base to bring up its own operating system. This means that Samsung, LG, Motorola, Huawei, and other Android devices that we’re used to seeing will most likely be getting a Linux-based alternative, although no official date has been announced for its arrival. In the beginning of the year, NetDragon Websoft stated that it would be releasing its own Linux-based ROM (read: recovery image) for the Tizen mobile operating system. The company’s teased “first step” towards these ROMs was the installation of Linux on the company’s Ring drone quadcopter. During a presentation at CES in January, Yiming LI, NetDragon’s vice president of engineering, said that the company’s R&D has already led to successful tests on a Ring drone. The drone he’s referring to is an RGB drone designed to be flown autonomously. Though the drone has already been made into an open system, Li said the company is still working on a system that “will definitely be based on Linux”.
4. What will be the first device to run the Kylin OS?
Kylin OS is a Chinese operating system designed to offer a premium user experience. It’s designed for the Chinese market, but it can be used by anyone anywhere in the world. The first hardware that will run Kylin OS is the Kylin Vision phone, which is expected to be available in China in late 2018. That’s also when we should expect more information about the launch format of Kylin OS. It could be either a 64- or 128-GB capacity device depending on their market. They may also cost a little bit more than other smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 or Huawei Mate X. The operating system can run on top of Android or Linux depending on how you want to look at it. It’s based on Linux and possibly optimized for Chinese users. With so many early adopters for Kylin OS and fewer than 5 million devices sold as of 2019, it sounds like NetDragon isn’t overly concerned about their technology. Instead, they want to offer reliable software and a premium experience to users around the world. The operating system includes an All-In-One USB Drive container to make loading data simple. It has a dedicated camera driver and multitasking menu so you can first go into Picture Mode and then switch to Video Mode. OneDrive integration plays nicely with WiFi and Bluetooth, so you can easily transfer photos. A TPU chip can keep track of different apps running on the device and let you access all of their information at a glance. They’ve even got full Google support for things like messaging and instant google maps. Lastly, they’ve included got a native YouTube app built-in to give you access to videos in just a few seconds. NetDragon doesn’t seem to be aiming to beat out the likes of Android, but they do want users to have a premium experience. Overall, from what has been revealed, Kylin OS looks very promising. Once it’s ready for a full launch, expect it to share specifics all over the internet.
