5G Network Effects On Human in India:
4G/5G network effects are a major cause of concern for the government’s decision to make its telecom market accessible only by one company, and in that regard India should reconsider. The impact of both networks on citizens is also something to be taken into account by the Government if it wants to achieve its target of having 300 million people under digital coverage by 2025.
The problem with India’s current system is that we have two or three mobile operators competing fiercely for subscribers. One of them has a higher installed base of over 60% while others have 20% penetration.
But since there is no data-sharing between networks, and every operator is building more towers, this leads to congestion in areas where there are few towers (e.g., border towns). This means that each tower takes time to reach customers because they do not share their infrastructure, leading to lower quality service which will result in reduced speed of connectivity.
For example, the best broadband connection usually costs $12/$20 per month — it means an average person spends about 2–3 hours to get connected. Thus, 5G will lead to very slow internet speeds. And as mentioned, everyone has a different pricing model, so it won’t necessarily be cheaper to buy your equipment from any one provider. But in terms of consumer expectations, 5G will inevitably mean faster speeds and better connections, and we don’t know how much these things can help us, but all are good signs.
The other issue of the 5G network will be more difficult to tackle and overcome. Because, firstly since I’m talking about “network effect”, “network effects” is nothing but the same thing as Google search results (or social media results).
It just gives you more of what already exists without taking away anything new. So, if you type “5G network effects”, the result will show us exactly the websites that feature articles like “5G network effects”.
However, when you write “5G network effects impact on a country”, you won’t see an article about the future technologies available for our devices. That’s why I guess it will take some effort for the government to address this issue once and for all.
But another point I would like to mention here is that according to my research, 5G will be around 90~95% cost saving compared to existing systems like 3G and LTE (that I haven’t confirmed yet). Of course, some companies will argue that they will sell their products at less than that amount so they will lose out, but in general, it’s obvious that consumers can save money through the 5G network effect.
Also, as a business person, I think that for the next couple of years with 5G prices will go down with time. So, overall, I feel the 5G network effect will add value to consumers and businesses, but let’s face it, they don’t know everything yet and it won’t be easy to tell which one will be the winner. Just be aware of what’s coming in the future and consider the possibility before buying anything.
